Born in Tasmania, F. M. Alexander (1869-1955) discovered the innate mechanism by which our natural coordination can be restored, ending pain and other symptoms caused by misuse of the body and giving us better quality of life. Alexander was a young actor, trained in Shakespearean oration, who suffered from voice loss during performances. When doctors could find nothing physically wrong with him, Alexander took it upon himself to find the cause of his problem. Realizing that his condition must be caused by his own behavior, he underwent years of careful, empirical self-observation. By alleviating the patterns of tension and misuse interfering with the relationship between his head, neck and back, Alexander realized he could restore his voice. He developed a method to teach others what he had learned; his books and work are known and practiced worldwide. |
